ABSTRACT

This chapter offers researchers suggested tools and methods necessary in order to effectively collect tissue samples from a living or deceased pet. Collecting tissue samples from live veterinary patients is best accomplished through communications with local referring veterinarians who perform procedures on a daily basis. The chapter focuses on the use of collecting tissue samples that are scheduled to be removed by the local veterinarian for an associated or unassociated procedure (i.e. ovariohysterectomy, castration, cystotomy, splenectomy, amputation, etc.). If a surgery is performed and no tissue samples are being submitted to a lab, then the tissue specimens are discarded in a specific receptacle used for the collection of discarded tissue. In human medicine, there are human subjects that have been on programs (signed a consent) for years; all this means is that arrangements have been made for what will happen with tissue samples after death.
