ABSTRACT
Auto-segmentation for radiation oncology has made significant advances in the past two decades. This chapter introduces the need for auto-segmentation in radiation oncology and provides a brief summary of the development and impact of auto-segmentation. The data used throughout the book, which were originally curated for the 2017 AAPM Thoracic Auto-segmentation Challenge held at the 2017 Annual Meeting of American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), is described in detail. Finally, this chapter discusses the challenge in deploying auto-segmentation tools for clinical use and the need for a clinical commissioning guideline.
