ABSTRACT

A central tenet of organizational readiness involves establishing mechanisms for data collection. Basic program management and data management discipline must exist before the data collected will be of high enough quality to allow for actionable insight. Data has a story to tell, but it is the job of analysts, data scientists, and the project team to act as the interpreter. In the nascent stages of readiness, it is easy to miss the message. Project teams function as smaller entities within a larger organization. Project teams encounter numerous barriers as they seek to enlighten their organization with their tamed data and analytical insights. Data fits into three general types or categories: structured data, unstructured data, and semi-structured data. Early big data analysis efforts in a project environment lend themselves best to the use of an analytical method at the beginning of the readiness spectrum.
