ABSTRACT

This chapter explores data mining refers to the selection, refinement, and analysis of data to make decisions or resolve some type of problems. It describes some traditional techniques for data mining will be analyzed in a project context, as well as some unconventional ways that data can be mined, and used, to maximize project success. Decisions are a critical part of every project. Every day team members need to make decisions about their work, the project manager about how to act on that work, the project board approves project documents, program managers decide on the prioritizations of projects, and the portfolio decides the proper resource allocations to optimize the portfolio. Confirmation bias is the tendency for people to search, use, and interpret only the type of information that supports their existing beliefs. Another problem when making decisions is the quality of the underlying data. Sometimes measurements are unreliable.
