ABSTRACT

This chapter notes that there are some similarities between the nonlinear upper-hybrid wave model discussed and models for weakly nonlinear lower-hybrid waves. As for the unmagnetized plasma, only the nonlinear dynamics of plane waves is discussed. Studies of also the nonlinear evolution of electron wave spectra in weakly magnetized plasmas are reported in the literature. Like lower-hybrid waves, also upper-hybrid waves have an increasing electromagnetic component as the characteristic scale length is increased. These effects will in general imply that possible stationary solutions will be “leaking” due to a small amplitude long wavelength electromagnetic wave component that can escape. The foregoing analysis was kept in rather general terms, and the ensuing analytical model ended up being quite complicated. It is appropriate to consider a few simplified cases, which allow a description based on considerably simpler models.
