ABSTRACT

In recent years, workplace emotions have gained immense attention in organizational research. Emotions are ever-present in the workplace as they are the integral part of human lives. Work-place experience involves a blend of positive and negative emotions that plays a vital role in shaping the mental health and well-being of the employees. Positive emotions tend to be extremely beneficial toward productive work environment, whereas negative emotions are considered to be harmful and unproductive. Lack of positive emotions makes an individual more vulnerable to stressful events. The presence of positive emotion strengthens the personal and social resources of an individual at the work-place. Employees are often found to be more satisfied with their jobs where positive emotions are seen as a valuable asset. Positive emotions at the workplace are characterized by the feelings of happiness, joy, enjoyment, enthusiasm, optimism, gratitude, and wellness that buffer against stress. Positive employees display higher level of competence, greater sense of pride, good interpersonal skills, creativity, and resilient behavior. Varied researches in the area of positive emotions address emotional processes that help in enhancing cognitive functions, promoting constructive behavior, and attaining desired organizational goals. Organizations propose an array of mechanisms for counteracting emotions at the work place. This chapter deals with understanding how positive emotions stimulate people to perform effectively in an organization. It also focuses on identifying the factors promoting positive emotions that serve as a trademark of positive health and happiness at the workplace.
