ABSTRACT

The chemistry of the sulfur and selenium is immensely rich. In the past few decades, ongoing research has unearthed new insights into the area of organosulfur and organoselenium chemistry. A more recent development, however, is the interest in the utilization of these organic compounds as organocatalysts. A great diversity of reactions catalyzed by sulfur and selenium organocatalysts has been developed in these few years. It is reflective of a growing interest undertaken by chemists not just in organosulfur and organoselenium catalysis but also of the broader concept of organocatalysis in general. This chapter will highlight some of the latest developments in this field. In addition to the reaction strategies and scope, the interesting roles played by the sulfur and selenium in the catalytic mechanism will also be focal points of the discussion.
