ABSTRACT

Drugs used in cardiology may be categorised in various ways, either alphabetically, by mode of action, frequency of use, or pharmacological activity. In this presentation, the most commonly used drugs in the cardiac catheterisation unit are grouped according to their major clinical effects and are discussed under the following major headings: (1.) Pain Relief, (2.) Antiplatelet and Anticoagulation Therapy (including antithrombin and thrombolytic agents), (3.) Control of Blood Pressure, (4.) Treatment of Arrhythmia (including inotropes, chronotropes, alpha blockers and beta blockers), (5.) Premedication and Sedation, (6.) Treatment of Nausea, and (7.) Other Conditions.
