ABSTRACT

The flat bugs of the family Aradidae constitute a well-defined family of the Aradoidea (Gyllensvärd 1964) and contain eight closely related subfamilies: Chinamyersiinae, Calisiinae, Aradinae, Isoderminae, Prosympiestinae, Aneurinae, Carventinae, and Mezirinae (Usinger and Matsuda 1959, Vásárhelyi 1987). The only economically significant species belongs to the genus

Aradus

, whose members are usually called the bark bugs. Most species of flat bugs are small, usually dark, black or brown, and, as their name suggests, they are dorsoventrally very flat. Usinger and Matsuda (1959) provide a systematic account of the family, and Kormilev and Froeschner (1987) a catalog.
