ABSTRACT

The main characteristic of any system consisting of colloidal particles concerns the stability-something that may be compared to whether the system will remain energetically stable or will take up a new state of more stable configuration. The theoretical analyses of electrochemical double layer (EDL) are based on a physical model in which the following items are classified: one layer is assigned as a fixed charge or surface charge attached to the particle or solid surface, and the other layer is distributed more or less diffusely in the surrounding liquid media in contact with the given particle. It is known that the electrical charge–charge interactions take place at a large distance of separation. The distribution of ions in an aqueous medium needs to be investigated in such charged colloidal systems. A colloidal suspension may be unstable and exhibit separation of particles within a very short time.
