ABSTRACT

There is little doubt about the toxic qualities of arsenic (As), and in particular, the toxic effect of some As species on biota, including humans (c 2). True contamination and pollution are usually highly restricted to location, however, and mostly relate to natural and anthropogenic point sources. Recent geochemical mapping projects in Europe and Japan with both highly industrialized and hydrothermally active areas demonstrate this clearly (Imai et al. 2004; Reimann et al. 2009; Salminen et al. 2005). As scientists, we shall contribute to a prudent and objective discussion to explain phenomena and processes and to support rational action and political decisions needed where this element truly gives reason for concern.
