ABSTRACT

250Nowadays, imaging technologies have a very important role in medical procedures. Automated computerized processing helps diagnose diseases and find structures, lesions, and other objects. An automatic procedure may detect or highlight potential cancerous cells, lesions in eye fundus images, or characteristic lesions in skin cancer. One major application area is to use these as aids to help the medical doctor diagnose a disease, automatically indicating areas that may be causing that disease. Another application area is to simply segment structures of the body area appearing in the image. In this chapter, we review the steps and some of the approaches used in each step of medical imaging processing with the objective of finding characteristic features.
