ABSTRACT
At the end of 1997, Chatri Sophonpanich, the patriarch of the Bangkok Bank, held a reception for Thailand's business leaders. He welcomed them not as tycoons, but as the “millionaires of yesterday” (Nation Multimedia 1998). Six months earlier, Chatri's bank was the largest private commercial bank in Southeast Asia and his guests were Thailand's Sino-Thai business elite.
