In this excerpt from her book, Within the Plantation Household: Black and White Women of the Old South, Elizabeth Fox-Genovese discusses women's place in the paternalist, hierarchical world of plantation slavery. The prescribed and actual roles of women are necessarily an important aspect for any group—for Fox-Genovese, the planter class—that interprets its world through a metaphor of family relationships.
