ABSTRACT

In this section we explore the problem of knowledge and understanding as a basis for comprehending how different patterns of knowledge accumulation are reflected in different organisational structures. This is a problem central to the innovation process since it relates directly to the issue of what a firm can be said to know, if anything. Since few scholars would deny that economic and social change is contingent on the continued growth of knowledge, this is not a trivial issue. Who precisely is said to know more when we link the growth of knowledge to the development of the firm?
