ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a phenomenon popularized as caps in Turkey. It seeks the transnational nature of caps which considerably interact with other cultures and involve a lot of foreign references mediated for self-expression of Turkish culture-specific cases. The chapter discusses Turkish caps of which appellation and idiosyncratic form differ from the phenomenon known as Internet memes worldwide, in the expectation that it would contribute to both international and Turkish literatures. Studies on Internet memes have not only sparked a heated academic debate upon these "pieces of digital content that spread around the web in various iterations" but have also encouraged those who are fully dedicated to an endeavor to apprehend their deeper implications. Some studies focus on the structure of Internet memes in pursuit of what characteristics Internet memes have in common.
