ABSTRACT

Decommodification of international trade is becoming a pervasive phenomenon even in a sector, like agriculture, where products are primarily traded as commodities. Of course, this is not an entirely novel breakthrough since international trade in high-value differentiated agricultural products, such as wines, cheeses, etc., has been taking place for centuries. What is new is the acceleration of this trade and the expansion of its domain under the current wave of globalization as a result of a complex set of technological and institutional changes that occurred in the last two decades (Yotopoulos, Chapter 1).
