ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how Bosch uses the graphic form to portray the continuous mind–body war that characterises how the author visualises her experience with bulimia. Bosch problematises the relationship to her body in addition to giving visibility to her bulimia as a monstrous double. The chapter argues that Bosch employs monstrous imagery to underscore the constant maltreatment that is directed toward the self/body through body image distortion. Bosch depicts the body in crisis utilising the discourse of the monster as a double that seeks to destroy the original body. Yo, gorda begins with Bosch’s memories of her nine-year-old life, and the text alternates between the present moment in the captions, which are in yellow, and recreating dialogues and internal reflections in the speech balloons, which are in white.
