ABSTRACT

Regional analyses draw upon several approaches to incorporate various social, cultural, political, or economic models as ways of explaining both the patterns and systems of regional settlements or testing models. This chapter discusses the scalability of spatial analyses and assesses the value of analyzing settlement patterns and systems on a regional level for ancient Israel and Judah to understand the continuity and change in settlement processes. A case study focusing on settlement in the northern hills of Manasseh during the Iron Age illustrates how settlement system analysis aids in our understanding of Israelite society.
