ABSTRACT

This chapter will address some of the ways in which the multimodality perspective can be meaningfully applied to an analysis of Iron Age inscriptions from the southern Levant, with a focus on “short” ritual texts. The dedicatory inscriptions analyzed in this chapter—an inscribed stone basin from the Iron II site of Kuntillet ‘Ajrud, and the inscribed stones and inscribed golden ornament attached to Aaron’s uniform described in Exodus 28 and 39—demonstrate how the ritual meaning and power of dedications were expressed and enacted not only through their words, but also through their form, media, design, and contexts of use.
