ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces case study methodology to the adapted physical activity profession for exploring the challenges and rewards of learning to teach individuals with and without disabilities in diverse physical activity settings in 2003. Case study methodology is intended to promote an interactive, problem-solving teaching and learning style, addressing realistic problems that occur in adapted and general physical education and other physical activity settings. Case study methodology is useful in learning how best to work with a diversity of individuals who represent an array of abilities and disabilities. A culturally fluent teacher is one who is culturally aware and able to code shift differentiated response behaviors in addressing both the collective cultural practices of diverse communities and the unique needs of individuals in a nonessentializing manner. A teacher’s use of culturally relevant pedagogy positions the languages, values, and cultures of all students within the educational process.
