ABSTRACT

Young just turned 18 years old, and he is in a special class for children with autism at Monroe High School. Never much for physical activity, Young spends as much of his day as possible sitting in a beanbag chair in his classroom watching YouTube videos on his tablet. Young has gained some weight in the past few years, and he has almost no muscle tone. Young’s physical education teacher told his family about a new YMCA that recently opened in the community, and she mentioned that she was asking all parents for permission to take the class from Monroe to the YMCA once a week to work out. The focus of this case is how his physical educator leverages the YMCA, makes accommodations as needed to get Young and his classmates to learn how to use the various exercise equipment, and get parents to join the YMCA and get their children to be more physically active.
