ABSTRACT

Ashley Brown-Moore is a first-year general physical education (PE) teacher at Northwest High School. She has a range of 15-25 students per class, and several of these students have disabilities. Most of these students have learning disabilities. Ashley also has some students with and without disabilities who present her with disciplinary problems. In fact, Ashley is concerned about one student in particular, Mikael, who has a learning disability concomitant with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition to Mikael’s tendency to be inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive, he is a very aggressive teenager who is quite competitive. An excellent athlete, Mikael plays football at Northwest and his on-the-field aggressiveness is praised and rewarded. However, Ashley is concerned about Mikael’s aggressiveness toward classmates. During class activities, Mikael goes as hard and fast as he can to win. He has a tough time understanding that activities in class require self-control and even finesse in certain situations. It also appears that Mikael does not quite comprehend that rules and routines, safety awareness, and task structures are necessary in PE classes. In this case, strategies for (a) increasing and maintaining students’ appropriate behaviors and (b) decreasing or eliminating students’ misbehavior are presented.
