ABSTRACT

This small charter school (pre-K through fifth grade) with a high percentage of students with disabilities works to include its students in general education classes. A new first grader with developmental coordination disorder presents challenges to the physical education (PE) teacher who is not trained in adapted physical education. After consulting with the student’s physical therapist, the PE teacher alters his lessons to enable the student to participate more fully in his class. The modifications work, and the new student is happy to move along with his group performing the same tasks. While the class is a success, the PE teacher realizes he has limitations planning lessons that are appropriate for all his students.
