ABSTRACT

The physical education (PE) teacher at this elementary school is interested in working with students with disabilities but has no real training. A new family with twin ten-year-old boys who have intellectual disabilities and severe spastic cerebral palsy has enrolled. The adapted physical educator at their former school had worked with the boys in the water, but there is no access to a pool here. The PE teacher works with the complex-area APE to create 1:1 and group classes, replacing swimming with Nerf ball exercises designed to increase the twins’ object control. They continue to extend the lesson plans to include multiple accommodations and peer tutors to improve the twins’ PE skills.
