ABSTRACT

This case focuses on Mrs. Gonzalez, a well-seasoned and by all accounts very good physical educator at River View Elementary School. Mrs. Gonzalez has worked with many children with disabilities, but she is suddenly faced with a special class of children with severe disabilities. Mrs. Gonzalez has never worked with students with such severe disabilities. The class also is quite diverse, ranging from children with autism spectrum disorder, severe intellectual disability, and severe cerebral palsy, to those with multiple disabilities. Mrs. Gonzalez is expected to teach this special class as a group, and she is really lost on how to organize the class. The children are so different, so having all the children do one activity does not make sense. How can she provide an individualized program within the group setting? Suggestions are presented in this case that explain how teachers can create and individualized program within a special group class.
