ABSTRACT

Mr. Johnson is the elementary physical education (PE) teacher at tiny New Dominion Elementary School in Jefferson County Public Schools. Over the years Mr. Johnson has had a handful of students with disabilities included in his general PE program. A special class with children with more significant disabilities has moved to Mr. Johnson’s school, and he does not have the knowledge or skills to work with these students. Fortunately, Jefferson County Public Schools has contracted with a special education cooperative that serves ten different rural school districts. This cooperative includes two adapted PE specialists who serve all ten school districts. Mrs. Sparrow (an adapted PE specialist assigned to New Dominion Elementary) will provide a mix of direct and consultative services. Once a week, Mrs. Sparrow will teach the entire special education class together with the support of the paraeducators. After finishing with the class, Mrs. Sparrow will meet with Mr. Johnson and talk about how to include these students and provide suggestions for accommodations for the following week’s unit of instruction. This case focuses on how Mrs. Sparrow serves as a consultant to Mr. Johnson to help him better understand how to safety and successfully include these children into his general PE program.
