ABSTRACT

This chapter showcases how young children can develop social and emotional learning through involvement in a community partnership program that fosters relationships across generations. An intergenerational program between a class of children aged 3 to 5 years old attending an early learning centre and elderly residents from a nearby residential home (the Program) will be used throughout this chapter as an example of its positive impact on learning. Evaluations and feedback from participating professionals as well as children’s learnings in the form of artworks and photos are included in this chapter to highlight the value of such partnerships in leading learning to respectful caring relationships and well-being in early childhood. A brief discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of intergenerational programs is provided that links directly with the techniques used in our Program. The intent is to provide readers with insights and inspiration for their own implementations.
