ABSTRACT
This essay traces the origins of the hospice movement in the United Kingdom as an innovative approach to pain and death. It explores the different impact of the hospice in the United States. Later sections deal with hospice in Japan, Russia and Uganda, amid varying material and cultural conditions for disease and death.
