ABSTRACT

After defining an epistemological frame in which ‘evidence’ can be understood as a subjective or inter-subjective concept, some fundamental concepts in statistics will be introduced, such as ANOVA and multiple regression. This will be extended to Generalised Linear Models and Mixed Models which account for the hierarchy and the time structure in the data. Finally, the discourse about evidence will be discussed within a Bayesian statistical frame. The latter is not only epistemologically more appealing than classical frequentist methodologies, but allows us to speak of ‘evidence’ in pragmatist terms, even in complex data-structures with small samples, and especially in mixed methods research.
