ABSTRACT

The amount of marking within each book differed from teacher to teacher and the impact of progress based on this marking was not always evident. Analysis of a questionnaire given to teachers at the start of the research project and through discussions during staff meetings identified that they found the marking system frustrating because it was felt this was mainly for Ofsted, parents, Senior Leadership Team and completing a book scrutiny. The new system involves signs and symbols allowing teachers to quickly and effectively mark pupils work during the school day. Written feedback is only given by teachers if they have worked with that child in the lesson and they do so there and then. Whilst a child’s work was being marked, teachers could make notes on individual children’s work and offer support for any gaps or misconceptions apparent within their learning. The Marking Overview Grid enabled teachers to keep track on each pupil’s progress.
