ABSTRACT
While contrastive rhetoric focuses on differences between one’s first and second languages, the author reflects on her movement between three languages and literacies. She shuttles between Chinese, German, and English. While she does find differences in the rhetoric of these three languages, she doesn’t find it difficult to move across them. She also finds many other influences on writing besides culture, such as the Marxist ideology that was influential in China during her education. She demonstrates how she developed a reflective awareness of the target language conventions and their differences from heritage language writing conventions to smoothly shuttle between the distinct writing conventions of different languages.
