ABSTRACT
To counteract the perception that the LA is a personal genre, providing transparent access to an individual’s experiences and trajectories, this chapter articulates the social and rhetorical shaping of such writing. It also provides the historical, material, and ideological contexts that shape the tropes of LA. The chapter goes on to provide the context of the research and teaching that informed the LAs featured in this book.
