ABSTRACT

Representing one of thirteen Latina full professors at her institution, Dr. Lopez Figueroa provides a reflective narrative that highlights which aspects of her doctoral training best prepared her to meet the academic rigor and expectations associated with tenure; identifies how certain potential challenges of navigating academia produced the need to attend to one’s sustainability as a Chicana scholar and as a human being; and lastly underscores which networking practices and mentoring opportunities successfully positioned her to develop a solid practice to strike a personal and professional balance to thrive within an often-dehumanizing academic context.
