ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author analyzes Richard Dresser’s little league baseball play Rounding Third as a way of arguing the merits of coaches as teachers. The two opposing philosophies competing for dominance within Dresser’s odd couple play provide a framework for examining the role coaches play as educators in youth sports. Whether coaches embrace a philosophy of win at all cost or just play to have fun, in the end, they are unquestionably teachers. So, what lessons are they imparting to the players they are charged with coaching?
