ABSTRACT

Schmidt’s chapter, “A Rocker in Teacher’s Clothing: Outlandish Lessons in School of Rock: The Musical,” although commenting on a (very) fictional situation, has relevance for K-12 education and teacher education. Media portrayals of teachers are just that: fictionalized accounts that fail to present an accurate representation of not only the daily demands of the job but the realities that classroom teachers face – and there is a danger in mythical teachers becoming the illusory standard by which many actual teachers are viewed and judged. I want to complicate and counter this representation with the issues that real teachers face.
