ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a thoughtful discussion of the ability of media users to remember stories told by visualized data. The chapter uses numerous examples (good and bad) to demonstrate the importance of simplicity when designing different types of charts and graphs. Finch provides suggestions for teaching data visualization including: students should keep their data simple and interactive to assist viewers in drilling down for more information, and consider who produced the data, when, why, and strengths, but also, the appropriateness of statistical methods, and the potential for errors, and missing data.
