ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the main concepts of globalisation and of internationalisation in higher education as they have developed in the scholarly literature over the last two decades. It then attempts to advance the ongoing debate by pointing to four ideal types of internationalisation—academic, political, democratic and economic—that resonate with the dynamics of change in academia. In doing so the chapter elaborates on the roles of the different actors in global higher education, and offers reflections on equity and inclusion in education, bridging to the emerging debate on schooling internationalisation. Finally, the chapter comments on the theoretical perspectives, methodologies and empirical findings presented in the contributions in this book and suggests possible future research directions to develop the body of knowledge in internationalisation in education.
