ABSTRACT

There is a lack of literature in the Pacific Islands on graduate students and their needs and characteristics. Utilising workshops to collect data, 23 thesis students at master’s and PhD levels of the School of Education and three participants from other schools were asked about areas they felt they were doing well in and elements they considered needing support. Two workshops were held at the Lautoka and Labasa campuses of the University of the South Pacific (USP) in the evening for about three hours. The study found important areas that can help facilitate student completions such as being independent workers, meeting deadlines, having a passion for the topic of choice, and the role of effective supervision. While supervision feedback and relationships were viewed positively by some, there are others who voiced the need for consistency in guidance.
