ABSTRACT

Formally established in 1948, the University of the West Indies is the premier and one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the former British West Indies. Graduate research supervision has been one of the areas targeted for continual renewal as the University struggles to make itself current and competitive in a regional world of diminishing resources for higher education. In this interview, I talk to two retired professors: Professor Barbara Lalla and Professor Ian Robinson, both products of the institution, about the history of graduate supervision; their experience of graduate supervision; their personal successes in the area; and projections for improvement of the process at the University of the West Indies. It is hoped that the collective wisdom culled from two such senior and distinguished members of the academic fraternity provides invaluable insight into how the graduate research experience can be positively revolutionised in the region.
