ABSTRACT

This chapter on “The Peace Journalism Approach” provides an overview and operational definition of peace journalism, outlining its evolution, principles, and giving examples of peace journalism in print media. The chapter makes the case for peace journalism, urging media practitioners to avoid the use of inflammatory language when covering elections and conflicts. The chapter argues for better preparation by journalists for peace-centered reporting during conflict situations which can be done through holding in-house peace and election reporting training for reporters like those covering upcoming elections in Africa. The chapter explores the importance of word choice and news framing as important aspects in the promotion of peace journalism in Africa.
