ABSTRACT

Vocabulary learning is a notoriously difficult, long-lasting, and important task in second language acquisition. Conscious efforts in learning vocabulary strategically may make the learning process more efficient, effective, and even more pleasant.

This chapter attempts to survey research on vocabulary learning strategies over the last 30 years, and outline a few directions for future research. I will first summarize vocabulary learning strategies research that is related to the vocabulary learning task, the vocabulary learner, and those strategies that are conducive to learning in various learning contexts. Finally, I will highlight three areas that need immediate attention, focusing on vocabulary, strategic learning in action, and usefulness, respectively.
