ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an Activist Approach to teaching as one way of responding to the “Cultural Competence Challenge”. It aims to strive to make progress in meeting the physical activity, sport and health-related needs of children and youths worldwide. The chapter discusses how people around the world have taken up an Activist Approach to meet the diverse needs of the young people they work with in a variety of educational and community settings. There are four critical elements to an Activist Approach: student-centred pedagogy; attentiveness to issues of embodiment; inquiry-based education centred in action; and listening and responding over time. Responding to students allowed the pre-service teachers (PSTs) to learn about teaching from the perspective of a teacher and an outside observer. In this process, the PSTs either taught or observed and collected data. The PSTs collected data on different aspects of the class such as high school students’ peer interactions, teacher behaviours, and body language of students.
