ABSTRACT

As leading institutions of higher education, AUA member universities have both the capability and the responsibility to push the education frontiers. Chapter 2 focuses on innovations in teachers and teaching, making liberal use of case studies and information from AUA member universities. The analysis focuses on teaching-related matters including student success, faculty and teaching, education programs, social engagement, and finally, finances and infrastructure. The order of these sections is deliberate: the focus is first on outcomes, then tracing back to infrastructure. The final section offers a brief summary followed by suggestions for advancing innovation in education policy, research, and practice. Most pointedly, the insights and challenges revealed through the chapter underpin the value of pursuing cross-institutional forms of benchmarking to articulate strategic options for development.
