The political economy of colonialism in India

Stretched across more than 400 years, India’s relationship with colonialism was always complex and took different forms at different times. Initially focused on the export of Indian goods and commodities to Europe, eventually it reversed this pattern, with European exports becoming dominant. In between, however, a dense web of connections developed, making India central to the growth of the world’s first global economy.
