ABSTRACT

Data strategies support decision making to accomplish institutional goals. The transformation of data into information that supports decisions can help lead the institution to better outcomes. Self-appraisal adds value to a data strategy when it is firmly rooted in a framework of clearly defined institutional goals. Assessment of a data strategy—or the cataloging and evaluation of elements of a data strategy—is most useful when it captures all data production and use across the institution. In addition to mapping the institution’s data function, the inclusion of a variety of stakeholders invites buy-in for a comprehensive data strategy and builds a resource network. The questions provided are designed to help facilitate dialogue about the process in an effort to uncover any hidden assumptions and establish agreed upon goals. Support of student success requires the inclusion of student input. Inquiry is at the heart of higher education, through academic scholarship and the institution’s exploration of itself.
