ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the enactment of conservatism on campus. First, authors synthesize multiple approaches to understanding conservatism will present a potential analytical path forward. The chapter conceptualizes conservatism as a relational identity rooted in symbolic claims, interaction, and abstract logics. Second, authors situate conservatism within higher education. Finally, the chapter examines the role of free speech as a signifier of conservative identity and a weapon against the liberal fa?ade of higher education.
