ABSTRACT

The Logopeds’ Association of Latvia was founded in 1995 by a small group of interested practitioners and has been a member of Comite Permanent de Liaison des Orthophonistes since 2005. Latvia is a country with a complicated history and although we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of our country in the year 2018, its second independence from the Soviet Union was gained only in 1991 and this has influenced the structure of our system of legislation. Services for children with developmental language disorders (DLD) in Latvia are delivered by speech and language therapists in schools and preschools. As DLD is considered a systemic disorder, an intervention approach is delivered following these stages: learning/teaching of correctly pronounced speech sounds, appropriate phonological awareness, enrichment and updating of vocabulary, some grammar issues and usage of all this in communication. According to the research and statistics, almost all children with other developmental problems have difficulties in acquiring language.
