ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on issues related to the teaching and use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in Vietnam as perceived by university teachers, full-time students, working part-time students, and working graduates in Hồ Chí Minh City and Huế. In-depth interviews with focus groups revealed that the participants held ambivalent views towards ELF, with positive views more often expressed by working students and working graduates, who have more exposure to English varieties. Reasons for the participants’ views are explored and discussed, with implications for future directions.
