ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a range of practical activities and contexts for learning about changing materials in science and design and technology. It considers contexts in which children can explore materials as they change shape and state, and observe materials over time. Children can change materials in a variety of ways including heating, cooling, drying or adding water to them, after which they can see whether these changes can be reversed. The use of malleable materials is a good everyday context to begin the exploration of changing materials. Prediction and explanation are key skills that can be developed when examining changing materials. Change and comparison are key themes in the Early Years Foundation Stage, with children developing an awareness of change using all of their senses. The concept of change is also explored in ‘Seasonal changes’ where children need to observe and describe weather, providing opportunities for exploring ice and puddles.
